The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association- NAVHDA, representing 31 recognized breeds, NAVHDA dogs are known for their exceptional ability to locate, point, and retrieve game birds and waterfowl, all while doubling as gentle, well-mannered home companions. Their demonstrations will highlight just how truly versatile these breeds are — both in the field and in family life.

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to foster, promote, and improve the versatile hunting dog breeds in North America; to conserve game by using well trained reliable hunting dogs before and after the shot; and to aid in the prevention of cruelty to animals by discouraging nonselective and uncontrolled breeding, which produces unwanted and uncared for dogs.

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association defines the versatile dog as one “that is bred and trained to dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water.” ~ NAVHDA Aims, Programs, Test Rules

Ministry K9 Team

We’re excited to welcome back the Ministry of Natural Resources Canine Program to the Retriever and Working Dog Area at the 79th Annual Toronto Sportsmen’s Show!

Throughout the weekend, the team will present live demonstrations showcasing the incredible work of Ontario’s conservation K9 units. Audiences will learn about the history of the program, how handlers and their dogs are selected, and the vital role these teams play in protecting our natural resources.

Each day, there will be a live show featuring conservation officers and their K9 partners. These demonstrations will highlight obedience, scent detection, and simulated deployment calls, giving attendees an inside look at how these dogs assist in the field.

Operated by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), the Canine Conservation Program trains dogs to detect scents such as fish, wildlife, firearms, and human presence. These highly skilled teams support conservation officers in enforcing hunting, fishing, and wildlife protection laws, while also assisting with evidence recovery, suspect tracking, and conducting education and outreach.

This year’s demonstrations will feature:
